Understanding Taxpayer Rights

Curious about tax laws? Concerned about your rights as a taxpayer? On Thursday, July 14 at 6:30PM, join Legal Services of New Jersey’s Senior Paralegal Valerio Gonzalez where you'll learn important information on taxpayer rights & obligations, as well as ways to avoid common tax issues.

Valerio will also review various tax issues which may arise, including but not limited to filing obligations, amending tax returns, identity theft, Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Economic Stimulus Funds information, and taxpayer options
& assistance when they have a debt with the IRS. Empower yourself with the knowledge of understanding your taxpayer rights!

Free Tax Preparation

Please note, registration is REQUIRED for these sessions.

Save up to $300 when you avoid usin a paid preparer. You can get your taxes done for free by IRS-certified volunteers at the library.

You must bring the following information with you to your session:

  • Valid Picture ID

  • Valid Social Security Card or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for all family members

  • If applying for an ITIN, please bring proof of your foreign status

  • All W2 and 1099 forms (if applicable) from employers

Please also bring the following if applicable:

  • A copy of last year’s federal and state tax returns

  • Any notice received from the IRS or state tax office

  • Childcare expenses, including the provider’s address and federal ID nubmer

  • Alimony paid or received

  • Property Tax bills

  • Mortgage interest statements

  • College tuition and student loan interest statements

  • Affordable health care statements and forms 1095-A, B, or C

  • Additional forms of incoming such as: prizes, awards, scholarships, and lottery/gambling winnings

  • A blank check or bank name, account number and routing number for direct deposit

Other documents may be necessary based on individual situations. It is the responsibility of the taxpayer to bring all necessary documentation.
