38 who deserve special citations

11/8/74

The 38 workers at the Avery Label Systems plant in North Brunswick who voluntarily took a 20 per cent pay cut to prevent the loss of jobs for 17 fellow workers deserve special citations in the war on inflation.

The workers, their union and the company agreed to go on a four-day week, temporarily, to prevent laying off staff not required because of a business slowdown. It amounts to a 20 per cent pay cut for those workers who would not have been laid off, but it saves the jobs, the seniority, the Insurance and other company benefits of those who would otherwise' have been let go.

If sacrifice, cooperation and working together to help each other are essential weapons in this country's fight to get the economy under control — and they are — the Avery Label Systems workers have to be congratulated for their early “enlistment.” They have responded in a way that should be an inspiration for the rest of us and they deserve commendation and thanks for their unselfishness.
